Hallmarking for students

Students often want to create their own saleable merchandise. UK law requires that a metal  described as silver or gold can only be legitimately sold as such if it carries the UK hallmark.

Some students attending for tuition on a regular basis have therefore opted to register their name at an Assay Office and have their work hallmarked. I guide them through this process. Initially they apply to one of the Assay Offices in the UK. These are based in London, Birmingham, Sheffield, Edinburgh and in Ireland at Dublin.

A students’ name is registered at the Assay Office of their choice; the office charges a fee for this. They can then choose their name mark which is usually their initials within a specific shape i.e. oblong, circle etc. This mark will be stamped on every piece of their assayed work and identify them as the maker for centuries to come.
